Located 70 km from Basalore in the state of Odisha (one of the poorest in India), Steton House is a home set up by the Daughters of Charity in Hatigarh so that children from tribes far from the towns can be housed and have access to education.
The sisters arrived in 1975 and began by visiting the poorest families in the region to provide them with material and spiritual support. They soon realised that the children in these families were cruelly lacking in education and health care.
The sisters have opened a small dispensary for lepers and others in need of medical care.
Thanks to Steton House, children have been able to be housed and educated in a nearby primary school.
"Over time, we have seen the number of children increase, reflecting the growing demand for education. As a result, many of them have been able to reintegrate into society, striving to build a better future for themselves. " Sr Rashmi
Project: Renovating the home's bathrooms and sanitary facilities
The home is home to 150 tribal and non-tribal children, many of whom come from remote villages with limited access to regular transport and adequate sanitation facilities.
« But to date, the 11 toilets and 6 bathrooms we use are in a very dilapidated state .» Sr Rashmi
These facilities are in dire need of repair and modernisation to improve their functionality and cleanliness.
« Pupils will be able to live in a healthier environment, and improved hygiene conditions will help to prevent the spread of disease and ensure the well-being of pupils, particularly girls. Young people will be able to concentrate on their education and personal development.» Sr Rashmi
The complete renovation of the bathrooms and toilets will be carried out in stages, so that the children can continue to use certain facilities while others are being renovated.
Thank you so much for your support for these young people.
With Them, Thanks to You!
All donations received in excess of the target will be donated to the project to enable the Sisters of Steton House to continue to provide education, care and hygiene for these young children from poor families.
