The aim of the ‘Flowers of Basalore’ project in India was to renovate the terribly dilapidated sanitary facilities of a hostel for students from tribal and marginalised groups, particularly girls.
Thanks to you, and to the students, parents and educational staff of Vincentian schools who chose to support this project as part of their Lenten Operation 2024, the Daughters of Charity were able to complete this much-needed project... albeit a little late, but with a lot of perseverance!
The work took place between periods of intense rainfall and a shortage of labour during field work periods. The local community depends on the agricultural fields it grows to survive.
"We regularly checked that the new facilities were working properly. We used quality materials and the work was carried out to the highest standards", explains Sr Rashmi.
The first stage of the work involved emptying and rebuilding seven septic tanks, which were fitted with new, secure covers. Next, all the pipes were replaced and connected with new ones to ensure the correct flow of water and drainage. The electrical installation was also redone. Finally, the bathroom and toilet doors were replaced and the walls repainted to improve the overall appearance and cleanliness of the facilities.
Before and after : The photos show the insalubrious and dilapidated state of the hostel's sanitary facilities.
"Hygiene conditions have become decent for the pupils! They are no longer exposed to a contaminated environment and contaminated water, which helps to improve their overall health.
Fewer pupils are ill, which means better attendance in class." Sr Rashmi
The project has had a significant impact, directly benefiting 73 pupils living in the hostel by improving their health and living conditions. The renovation work has created a great opportunity to raise awareness among the pupils and their families of soil-borne and water-borne diseases.
"The young girls at the home, in particular, can share their knowledge in their communities and make a positive and lasting change." Sr Rashmi
The pupils thank the donors 😃
