The Daughters of Charity arrived in Peje, a town in western Kosovo, in 1948.
As well as being involved with the local population through visits to families living in extreme poverty, caring for the sick in hospital, caring for the elderly and young people, they are particularly committed to the disabled, notably through the Centre for Independent Life (CIL).
Founded in 2003, CIL welcomes 35 people, aged between 10 and 65, with physical and mental disabilities (Down's syndrome, autism, mental retardation) and of all faiths.
The organisation provides a reassuring atmosphere for people who are fragile and often isolated by their condition. Free care means that even the most humble families can entrust their disabled loved ones with the hope that they will then be able to integrate as fully as possible into working life and be accepted by others.
"This organisation tries to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and hygiene, and to socialise them by trying to find them a job. We also educate and train families (most of whom are very poor) to help their children become independent". Sister Adriana
The centre is open every day from 8am to 4pm and applications from new beneficiaries are pouring in.
The CIL does not receive sufficient support from state bodies and therefore needs additional funding. The donations received are no longer sufficient to cover day-to-day activities and to pay the salaries of the staff, who sometimes agree to work on a voluntary basis.
"To provide a quality welcome, we now need to equip ourselves with furniture (chairs, tables) for activities. Without a good oven and electrical appliances, it is also difficult to prepare meals for our residents. Finally, we need to retain our dedicated staff by paying their salaries." Sister Adriana
Today, 35 people are cared for at the centre, all with special needs and different diagnoses.
"The main aim of the centre is to offer these disabled people a place where they can feel safe and secure, where they can feel good and where they can move towards maximum independence when they are able to do so." Sister Adriana
With your support, we can continue to welcome them to the centre with dignity and in good conditions.
Thank you so much!
With them, thanks to you
