Makinsk, a rural town in Kazakhstan, was founded in the early 20th century. It has an extreme continental climate, with temperatures ranging from -45°C in winter to +40°C in summer.
The population, heir to historical deportations, is made up of many nationalities: Poles, Germans, Russians, Kazakhs and many others. Most inhabitants live in precarious houses built of mud and straw, often without running water. Unemployment and poverty are omnipresent, compounded by scourges such as alcoholism and drug addiction. Those who work earn an average of just €300 a month.
In the face of such distress, Sister Halina Wiczling and Sister Margaret, Daughters of Charity, have set up an impressive network of help.
They teach catechism to around 100 people each year, help 45 poor families, run a charity kitchen that feeds 80 people a week, and welcome 30 children to their day center. In winter, they even house 8 homeless people in their own home. Their home visits bring medical care and spiritual comfort to the most isolated.
Today, their project concerns two women in great need.
- Tatiana, 45, has been raising her two teenage daughters alone since her husband left her in 2021. Her exhausting job in a poultry slaughterhouse earns her 400 euros a month. She lives under an asbestos roof that leaks and threatens her family's health. But she is unable to finance the work on a new roof. Her daughters, excellent students who dream of going to university, deserve better than this precarious situation.
- Marja, 47, lives alone and struggles with chronic asthma. In debt after caring for her father until his death, she survives in a cold, damp house with no running water! Her monthly income of 400 euros is barely enough to pay off her debts, leaving her in total destitution.
The project: to make a real difference to the daily lives of these 2 women
- replace Tatiana's dangerous roof with a healthy one
- install running drinking water at Marja's home.
These improvements, scheduled to take place over a four-month period in the summer, will restore dignity and hope to these two families. The work will be carried out by local contractors under the supervision of the sisters and Father Tomasz Dadek of the parish.
Beyond the material improvement, this project embodies the spirit of charity that animates the sisters in mission around the world: offering the most destitute not just emergency aid, but a perspective for the future when survival is a daily challenge.

A Daughter of Charity for 44 years, I have dedicated my life to serving the most vulnerable. A nurse in Poland, then provincial bursar, I have been a missionary in Kazakhstan for 4 years, responsible for the Makinsk community. I coordinate a solidarity kitchen for around 70 people - large families, the elderly, the sick - and provide medical, spiritual and administrative support. I also provide educational support for children and young people through courses tailored to their needs.
