We did it

In the north-east of Brazil, in the small town of Pacoti in the state of Ceará, the Daughters of Charity run the Instituto Maria Imaculada, where they take in children and teenagers from very poor families.

The aim of the "Roof of Tomorrow" project was to renovate the roof of the classrooms in one wing of the school, which was in danger of collapsing. The sisters had had to close these classrooms.

The roof renovation work was carried out in two stages:

- purchase of materials (colonial tiles and wooden beams)
- demolition of the 90-year-old roof structure, followed by installation of the new beams and tiles.

"Thanks to your generosity, we were able to buy the materials for the roof. But the work isn't finished yet because the total value of the work is much higher than the amount we received. We are still looking for a way to finish the work...". Sr Lucia

Although the project is not yet complete, the partial re-roofing has already enabled pupils to resume lessons, and teachers to continue providing quality education in renovated classrooms.

"The parents of one of our pupils, on arriving at the school and seeing the roof being renovated, raised their hands to the sky and thanked us for this initiative, exclaiming: "Now we can rest easy, the roof is being renovated and our children will be safe and studying in better conditions." Sr Lucia

The beneficiaries of this project are 128 socially vulnerable pupils and their families. Thanks to your support, alongside the four Sisters of the Daughters of Charity who work in this town and this school, these children will benefit from an education that will enable them to overcome the barriers of social inequality.

The children and Sr Lucia thank you on video

With them, thanks to you!
