The aim of the project was to equip a medical unit to provide dental care for the inhabitants of a very poor and inaccessible region of Albania.

"There has never been a dentist in this region to treat them and they have no money to pay for transport to towns where they could receive dental treatment." Sr Elizabeta

A project successfully completed in very difficult conditions

Koman is located in a very isolated mountainous area, with bad roads. In addition, numerous floods in winter have made the project difficult to implement, and it was not possible to start work on the project as soon as the financial aid was received a year ago.

"Going to Koman, a very remote area, is very tiring, but it's worth it, because we think of the people in these very isolated regions. This project has been a real blessing for the poor people of this region." Sr Elizabeta

A first group of 30 patients, adults and children, were finally able to benefit from dental treatment carried out on a voluntary basis by two dentists. They were also taught about oral hygiene. A second group of people will receive dental treatment at the end of the year.

In total, there will be more than 100 beneficiaries, including 20 patients from other, even more isolated villages! Their transport by boat across Lake Koman to the doctor's surgery has been paid for, and they are very happy.

Much-awaited dental treatment

 Dentists descaled teeth, pulled teeth, treated cavities...

"It was great to see the happy faces! One patient had a problem with a tooth root, and thanks to the tooth extraction, he no longer feels the daily pain." Sr Elizabeta

Another "blessing" was that during this period, the sisters received an autoclave (a device used for sterilisation by steam heat treatment). As a result, they did not need to buy one as originally planned, and were able to purchase dental care equipment and products for the second group of patients.

"We've received a lot of phone calls expressing gratitude and thanks.
So we can say that the title of this project, 'The Teeth of Happiness', is really coming to fruition!" Sr Elizabeta
