Vlorë is the third most populous city in the Republic of Albania.
The Daughters of Charity arrived in the region in 2020 to help poor people living in the suburbs, particularly the elderly and abandoned.
"We go out to meet different families and help them with clothes, medicine and food. Many of the inhabitants share their problems with us, such as alcohol and drug addictions, family separations, emigration, abandonment by parents and the country. " Sr Elizabetë
The sisters are also active in a centre for disabled people, the Q.ZH.P.A.K., which houses 30 resident orphans, abandoned by their families and suffering from physical and mental disabilities.
These young people suffer from a combination of severe cognitive and motor disabilities, which means they need constant attention to maintain their health and hygiene.
"Our centre is financially supported by the local government, which enables us to employ skilled staff to look after young adults and orphans. But even if the care teams are mobilised, we lack the resources to meet the physiological and protective needs of these young disabled adults and to help them lead as normal a life as possible." Sr Elizabetë
A few months ago, the sisters managed to finance the purchase of new beds for the children.
This year, one of the most pressing problems is the hygiene and incontinence of these children and young adults who are not self-sufficient, most of whom cannot wash or change on their own.
To ensure better hygiene for these young people and protect them from the risk of illness, the centre needs to :
- Build new lockers to store linen (bedding and clothing)
- A new tumble dryer in the laundry room
- Hygiene products (shampoo, soap, toothpaste)
- Cleaning products for bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas
"The children have to be changed and even washed several times a day. Our equipment is starting to malfunction and we need to buy a new tumble dryer. We are also short of hygiene and cleaning products."
"With your help, we can improve their quality of life and help them feel better about themselves." Sr Elizabetë
Thank you for your commitment and for everything you can do for these 30 young people!
With them, thanks to you!

I am Sister Elizabetë Saliqunaj, Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul.
I joined the Society in 1991 and have been on mission in Albania since 2022.
Every day in Vlorë, we go out into the streets of the town, looking for, visiting, listening to and helping as many poor people as we can, especially elderly people who are alone. Along with 3 other sisters who are social workers, we work at the Q.ZH.P.A.K, a centre for disabled people. We lack many things, especially hygiene care for young people with disabilities.
