In Butare, in the south of Rwanda, the Daughters of Charity work in the service of the poorest in the “Maison Divine Providence”which was created in 1998.

In particular, they take care of the most vulnerable women (often suffering from HIV/AIDS), and pay particular attention to ensuring their health and means of reintegration.

“These women accept to do precarious work, but they accept it because it's the only way they can provide for their children's basic needs.“ Sr Josiane

A renovated house for 2 widow mothers with families

2 very poor mothers live in insalubrious houses. With rainwater running off and stagnating, they and their children are often exposed to diseases such as pneumonia and malaria, even though they are all already in poor health.

Anastasie is a widow with three children, including a cognitively impaired son and 2 daughters.

“His house, well worn and old, is about to fall down. We're going to tear it down and build a new one. To support the family, Anastasie works for wealthy neighbors and manages to earn a little money or food for herself and her three children. In spite of everything, this is a family that remains cheerful and welcoming.” Sr Josiane

Béatrice, suffering from HIV/AIDS, is also a widow with a son and a daughter.

“Her house is solid, but during the rainy and dry seasons, the mosquitoes get in and they almost always have malaria. Despite her fragile health, she tries to work at the neighbors' to find the necessities for her children. She is very brave.” Sr Josiane

The sisters of the “Maison Divine Providence” are able to finance the work of the masons and some of the building materials from their own resources.

However, they need additional funds to cover the full cost of the renovation project, which will enable these 2 mothers and their children to regain their health and safety in dignified accommodation.

The Daughters of Charity care for all these mothers, victims of poverty, inequality, violence and discrimination. Solving their problems also means protecting their children and building a better future for them.

Thank you for supporting Anastasie and Béatrice!

Sister Josiane MUKAMURENZI.

I have been a Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul since 2020. I was on mission in the Nyamirambo-Kigali community as head of the Sewing Workshop. Currently, I work in the social service of the “Maison Divine Providence” community in Butare in the south of the country. I visit the poor in their homes, listen to them and help them to achieve their own advancement through small development projects. I am a member of this community, “Maison Divine Providence”, which is a formative community to prepare young people who wish to become Daughters of Charity for the postulancy.
