In Cameroon, because of traditions, beliefs or economic difficulties, some parents neglect their disabled children, others abandon them. These children are sometimes accused of being carriers of evil spells: they are then isolated from their community, chased away with their mother or even in the worst cases killed.
In the central and western region of Cameroon, 5 Daughters of Charity work in the follow-up and accompaniment of 234 children and young people living with a disability. They may have cerebral palsy, be visually impaired, deaf and dumb, suffer from epilepsy or malformations.
The high number of children with disabilities can be attributed to the abuse of indigenous products during pregnancy, the refusal or neglect of pregnant women with regard to prenatal consultations, and poor obstetrical practices.
« Faced with these growing cases, we have put together a team of efficient caregivers to deal with these physical and neurological health problems that can later become a real public health problem because these children are considered as cursed children and are rejected, abandoned to their fate by the family and society. » Sr Luz Marina Taborda FIorez
Physiotherapy sessions will enable 50 children with CMI paralysis to regain some motor independence.
"In cases of psychomotor delay, the child recovers up to 90% of his abilities and the rest depends on all the attention, love and support of the family".
A financial contribution from the parents will be required for the smooth running of the service and to ensure their personal investment.
As the child's first therapists, parents will be empowered and trained to apply the exercises proposed to their children on a daily basis at home.
« They will have the satisfaction of seeing the gradual physical, functional, and morphological evolution of their child, who will be able to consider resuming a normal life cycle, they who are considered a burden by society. These children will be able to be re-inserted into adulthood by benefiting from an orientation towards manual work or practical trades such as; carpentry, sewing, masonry, craft activities, etc....»
This project of taking care of the children is spread out over 3 years. Sister Luz Marina Taborda FIorez has solicited the Rosalie Projects to finance the physiotherapy of these 50 children for 1 year.
Each and every one of your donations will facilitate the integration of these 50 children who, accompanied by the attention and follow-up of their parents, will be able to regain their autonomy and dignity.
