Isolation of the elderly in EHPAD, a harsh reality

Maison Sainte-Hélène is an EHPAD in Epinay-sous-Sénart, Essonne, France, home to 72 residents over the age of 60, including 14 sisters, depending on their state of health. The house was bequeathed to the Company of the Daughters of Charity in 1850, and is also part of the Monsieur Vincent Association they created in 1994. The association pays particular attention to the most disadvantaged elderly, respecting life and human dignity.

"Since COVID, EHPADs have become more isolated from the rest of society than ever before. At EHPAD Maison Sainte- Hélène, we see that residents are locked into this isolation." Florence Gauthier, animator.

Many elderly people living in EHPAD are losing their physical or intellectual autonomy, and suffer from loneliness and exclusion

"The loss of their cognitive, motor and sensory capacities generates a number of difficulties that need to be taken into account, such as fatigue, slowness of execution and reflection. Social interaction diminishes, as they have difficulty moving around or hearing. Moving into an institution is a painful and difficult step to accept". Florence Gauthier

An art therapy project to open up or extend access to culture

"It's crucial for us professionals to surround the elderly, stimulate them and encourage them to maintain social interactions. That's why we've made it our mission to create social links by opening up Maison Sainte-Hélène to the outside world." Sr Geneviève

A project has thus been set up to encourage escape and psychological relaxation, improve self-esteem and strengthen social interaction.
The acquisition of a touch screen will enable us to offer conferences and virtual visits to the museum, with the support of a professional. Art therapy workshops will be offered using a variety of techniques, including painting, ink and collage.

These proposals will benefit all 72 residents, including those who do not leave the EHPAD.

Thank you very much for your support, which will help to break the isolation of our dear elders!

Florence Gauthier and Sr Geneviève Doucet

My name is Sister Geneviève Doucet, and I am a Daughter of Charity. I've been with the Sainte-Hélène home since 2007. I've always taken on various administrative and reception duties. I support Florence Gauthier in this project for the well-being of the residents.
Florence Gauthier is an activity leader at the Maison Sainte-Hélène EHPAD, which is managed by the Monsieur Vincent Association. With a BPJEPS Loisirs Tous Public diploma, she became an EHPAD activity leader after working on various projects with the elderly.
