In Kigali, in the district of Kicukiro, thirteen households were living in very difficult conditions, dependent on small, irregular incomes or sometimes begging. Sr. Olive Nyiranzakira and Sr. Théodosie Nyirahagenimana, Daughters of Charity, launched the “At the good market” project with the clear intention of restoring dignity to women through work and the hope of a better future for their families.

It all began with encounters, simple moments when we talked about dignity, trust, and the possibilities of creating small businesses. The sisters went to see them where they lived, observed their realities, their small strengths already present, their still timid dreams. Together, they looked for suppliers, established a budget, and then “opened the doors” to a stable business within a legal framework that each could run with pride: sale of fruit and vegetables, foodstuffs, communication devices, sewing, tofu and soy cooking...

The women were trained, supported, and guided in their first steps as entrepreneurs. They visited their future workplaces, met suppliers, and in some cases opened their first bank accounts. Thanks to the funding they received, the women were able to purchase their first merchandise and start working in local markets.

Little by little, the routine of trading created a new dynamic: selling, welcoming customers, earning their own income, returning home in the evening with the certainty of having enough to feed their children or pay for healthcare. Many found stability: a schedule, organization, a place in the community. Several even began to save money, a step that had long been unimaginable for these thirteen women!

"The path to setting up small businesses was not without obstacles. The increase in the cost of living (fuel, goods, market taxes) was a real challenge. With our currency losing value, starting a business required extra courage!" Sr. Olive

But despite these difficulties, the families persevered, closely supported by the sisters and motivated by the desire to build a more stable life.

The families no longer need to beg, the children are back in school, and the parents finally feel useful and respected. Forty-eight people are living better thanks to this project!

Marie Louise tells us: “I thank those who helped me for the support I received, which enabled me to feed my children. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you.”

The project is now complete, but its impact continues every day: in the markets where thirteen women work with joy and gratitude, in homes where children eat better, sleep better, study better, and in the silent but powerful feeling of having regained their dignity.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we say a big thank you on behalf of the beneficiaries, our sisters who have closely accompanied these families. Your support came at the right time to help the poor. They are joyful and grateful to have a job that helps them earn a living with dignity.” Sr. Theodosie
