The aim of the ‘Song of the Steppes’ project in Kazakhstan was to repair the dilapidated, insalubrious homes of 4 families.

The urgent renovation of the house of Mrs Tatjana N.

A wall threatened to collapse at any moment. To avert this danger, the structure was reinforced with beams, planks and breeze blocks. Part of the wall was rebuilt using hollow blocks to make it more resistant to damp. The ceilings, doors and windows were repainted, and the walls wallpapered. New lamps have been purchased, which are not only brighter but also more economical. New flooring has been laid in the kitchen.

"Thanks to some savings (the family helped with the work), we were able to buy an oilcloth tablecloth and curtains, as well as three sets of bedding and three towels. This new living environment has inspired Mrs Tatjana N. to continue improving her home, even if she doesn't have the means to do so right now." Sr Halina

For Igor, rebuilding after fire

This man was going through a particularly difficult time. His house and banya were destroyed by fire, and shortly afterwards he had a car accident that destroyed his vehicle. Overwhelmed by the events, Igor gradually sank into depression. But thanks to the help he received, he was able to get back on his feet. He quickly bought the necessary materials and rebuilt his banya himself. Not only does it enable him to wash and keep warm, it has also been a real therapy for him. Today, he is so proud of it that he is happy to open it up to his family and to a neighbour who is also in difficulty. The project has given him back his dignity and a new lease on life!

A major project to renovate the home of Mrs Tatjana L.

"She lived for years in appalling conditions, struggling every winter to survive the cold. We bought bricks, a door and a top plate for her stove, which was falling apart." Sr Halinaing apart." Sr Halina

After a long wait to find a workman, the renovations were finally able to begin. With the help of her family, she wallpapered two rooms, repainted the ceilings and windows, and replaced the basic lighting (simple bare bulbs) with modern, energy-saving lamps.

"We laid new floors in two rooms and the kitchen, installed pretty curtains and bought covers for the armchairs and sofa. Complete bedding - duvets, pillows, sheets - has been provided for everyone in the house." Sr Halina

Today, Mrs Tatjana L. can't believe how much her house has been transformed - it's clean, warm and welcoming!

The work took longer than expected because of the many deep holes in the walls, which had to be patiently filled. Once the repairs were complete, we had to wait for the walls to dry before continuing. The stove was refurbished, its plate changed, and the walls and ceiling had to be repainted several times, as the dirt was so ingrained. The kitchen furniture was renewed, and the floor was levelled as well as possible and carpeted. The electrical wiring was replaced with new cables and efficient lighting.

 "As in the other houses, we also bought curtains, a tablecloth, bedding and towels. Thanks to these improvements, Mrs Tatjana K. can now cook, live in a warm and healthy place, and look to the future with greater peace of mind." Sr Halina

Toutes les sommes reçues ont été utilisées avec soin. Comme certains habitants ont participé aux travaux eux-mêmes, grâce à ces quelques économies, ils ont pu bénéficier d’articles essentiels comme de la literie, des serviettes et des couvertures supplémentaires.

« Les changements sont visibles, mais ils vont bien au-delà de l’apparence : ces rénovations ont apporté de la chaleur, de la lumière, du confort, mais aussi de l’estime de soi et de l’espoir. Aujourd’hui, ces familles vivent dans des logements plus dignes, plus sains, ce qui améliore leur bien-être tant physique que mental.

Je tiens à remercier sincèrement tous les donateurs pour leur générosité. Nos bénéficiaires étaient très émus, parfois incapables de trouver les mots pour exprimer leur gratitude. Ils ont été touchés de voir que, depuis la France, des personnes pensaient à eux et souhaitaient les aider. Moi-même, j’ai été honorée d’être l’intermédiaire de cette chaîne de solidarité. J’ai suivi les travaux de près, rendant visite aux familles, les encourageant à participer autant que possible. Ce projet a réparé bien plus que des murs : il a redonné espoir, dignité et chaleur humaine. » Sr Halina
