The ‘Just a sign will do’ project, based in the coastal town of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, involved providing medical, food and hygiene assistance through the distribution of medicines, foodstuffs and hygiene products. Many individuals and families live in vulnerable circumstances and, due to a lack of financial resources, are unable to adequately meet their basic needs.

This project has confirmed that there is a great need for support within the community.
“In our community, there are many people living in vulnerable circumstances and in poverty who need help, particularly the elderly, children and families facing economic and health difficulties. Due to these constraints, it has not been possible to help everyone in need or to deal with as many cases as we would initially have liked.” Sr. Juana Emilia
Faced with this situation, the sisters have endeavoured to use the available resources responsibly, giving priority to those with the greatest needs and the most urgent situations. They have succeeded in making a tangible difference to the lives of those in their care. The project contributes directly to improving the quality of life of poor and vulnerable people and to bringing about tangible and sustainable changes in their well-being.

Thus, even relatively modest support can bring about a significant change in a person’s life.
For example, a young girl was able to undergo the necessary tests, receive a clear diagnosis and access the treatment she needed. She is doing well today and is continuing her treatment successfully. A family received support to cope with a death with dignity.
“These results are a concrete illustration of the impact of aid when resources reach those who need them most directly.” Sr. Juana Emilia
The funds still available will continue to be used responsibly and gradually, whilst always seeking to provide a humane response to the needs identified within the community.
The sisters will be expanding the number of people receiving support, particularly children, the elderly and families living in poverty.
“We are grateful because this project enables us not only to provide material aid, but also to support people going through difficult times and to give them hope and new opportunities.” Sr. Juana Emilia
