Projets Rosalie - Burkina Faso

Often considered one of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso's mainstay is the agricultural sector.

Despite progress in recent years, however, crops suffer from low productivity due to repeated droughts and floods, declining soil fertility and poor infrastructure in this small, landlocked Sahelian country (especially roads).

Particularly violent attacks by jihadist groups and kidnappings in the north and east of the country are also driving the population out of the country, increasing the demographic pressure on land where crops are already scarce.

Located in the Boucle du Mouhoun region (MHN), one of the 13 regions that make up Burkina Faso. Nouna is the capital of the province of Kossi, which has a population of over 270,000. Agriculture employs 90% of the population, half of whom are under 25 years old.

The Daughters of Charity arrived in 2009 to provide various services to poor families in rural villages, particularly in the areas of health, social/pastoral and education.

Small-scale livestock project to support 15 families

In this rural community based on subsistence farming, the sisters are particularly vigilant about the threat of malnutrition, especially among women and children.

During their visits to the area, they met many families struggling to find a means of survival, some of whom had to leave their homes and livestock to flee terrorist threats.

Wishing to go beyond the simple provision of food and clothing, the Daughters of Charity are keen to support these people by accompanying them in an agricultural project to provide for their needs.

9 women and 6 men would like to set up a livestock project (poultry, pigs and small livestock) that would contribute to

- provide nutritious animal protein in their diet.

- improve their family's food security,

- while generating income to support themselves.

"Our goal is to help these families realise their dream of having livestock that will be a source of income to help them take care of their families" reports Sr Veronica.

Despite the limited resources available to the community, the sisters decided to finance the development of the cattle yard with all the necessary materials to build the pens and create a feeding and water system.

Thanks to the Rosalie Projects, "we will also be able to help them get a good breed of livestock that they need to start with, to ensure good production.

Sr Veronica Acheneje
