San Lorenzo, a boarding school run by the Sisters to welcome and educate children from indigenous communities

San Lorenzo de Moxos is a town in northeastern Bolivia, a region inhabited by the Moxos ethnic group. 8 indigenous communities live with their families along rivers (the Secure Totora or the Tijamuchi) or in the Amazon pampas, a territory of bush and swamp. The climate is typically tropical, hot and humid.

These semi-nomadic indigenous populations live from agriculture, hunting and fishing. But they are very poor and marginalized by society and the government due to difficult geographical conditions and access.  Many families are still illiterate.

The Daughters of Charity arrived in the region 68 years ago to provide education and health care to these isolated communities. They sometimes take several days by boat or on horseback to visit them, often in dangerous conditions!

To enable the children of these indigenous families to attend school on a long-term basis, the Daughters of Charity provide a home for 45 high school students - 20 girls and 25 boys aged 15 to 19 - at the San Lorenzo boarding school.

Reduce the digital divide, a factor of inequality in the educational path of these high school students

 "Our high school students can't progress in their academic careers if they don't have computers to master digital tools and technologies. They need to do research as part of their coursework to earn their diplomas.

We also need to equip ourselves with printers and audio equipment, and install an overhead projector.

Already poor families obviously don't have the financial resources to help us acquire all these digital tools. And we ourselves lack the funds to cover these expenses.
